CORAL

coral is formed by the microscopic animal called coral polyp. they for very tiny hard shells for them. these tiny shells make a colony in tree like form. these colonies form the structure which can a hand sized or may b too large to cover the whole continent reef.There are different types of corals that provide corals of different hues. Gem coral occurs in white, pink, orange, red, blue, violet, gold and black. The black and golden coral types differ from the white to red in that they are not calcium carbonate, but rather a horny substance. But the ones that are mainly used in jewelry are red corals, pink corals and white corals.


it is one of the oldest gem stone used for jewelery nearly 25000 BC. Coral can catch small fish and animals. Mostly coral depends on sunlight and shallow water. Its the trade name of Fossilized Limestone. It was very popular a few years ago but now expensive for some peoples.

Black coral
Maui Divers was the first who discovered black coral bed in 1958. the worlds fines balk coral is Hawaiian Black Coral. It is very rare and gives such a nice luster after polishing that you can see your won reflection in it. It is believed that it guards against the misfortune.

Black coral is exotic and dramatic and has long been considered to guard against misfortune.black coral is dull but develops a vitreous luster when buffed and polished. It is sensitive to heat, acids, and hot solutions. Black corals can also be found in abundance off the Persian Gulf and the Mediterranean. Black corals do not form reefs or heads and are rare to find these days.

PINK coral
First it was discovered in 1966 under the 12000feet of water. Value of pink coral varies according to its rarity. Its a dense and hard gem. about this gem its said that it brings good health.

Red Coral
it is found in depth of approximately 500 to 1000 feet. Its growth rate is 1/4 per year, this makes it highly treasured gemstone.

Gold Coral
Dr. Richard Grigg using Star II submarine discovered it in 1971. Its growth rate is 3 inches per year. it have various color ranging from the sandy beige to almost black.

Coral Jewelery
Most of the coral used in jewelry comes from the Mediterranean or from pacific sea near Japan and Taiwan. Italy is world famous for its coral jewelery creation. In Italy Torre del Greco is the best place where the coral jewelery is made. Large pieces of coral are usually used in umbrella handles or walking stick, while the small pieces egg shape or round bead are used in necklaces and bracelets. Also used in rings, pendent, cuff links,belt buckles. Coral is exported to China and India where it is used in religious rituals. Special care is require to clean the coral jewelery, because its much softer than the other gems.
